Cyril John Allan was a rifleman in World War I (1914-1918). He was wounded in action in France in 1916 and spent 86 days in hospital recovering. He was my first cousin thrice removed - Debbie McCauley.

Cyril John Allan (1897-1969)Cyril John Allan was born in Paiaka, Bay of Islands, on 31 January 1897. His parents were Margaret Isabella McCauley (1867-1934) and Charles Hallard Allan (1849-1938).

Cyril was a rifleman in World War I. His previous occupation was ‘kauri climber’. His next of kin is listed as his father Charles Allan of Hukerenui, Bay of Islands. Cyril embarked with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 3rd Reinforcements 1st Battalion, E Company on 8 January 1916. He left Wellington aboard either the Tahiti or the Warrimoo for Suez, Egypt (Nominal Roll No. 16, p. 2) (Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph Database).

On 20 September 1916 Cyril was wounded in action in France. He received a gunshot wound to the face for which he spent 86 days in hospital recovering. He embarked for England on 23 September and on 24 September he was admitted to Camberwell Hospital.

On 14 March 1917 he received a gunshot wound to the jaw for which he spent a further 28 days in hospital.

Cyril was discharged from the army on 7 June 1919.

He married Ellen Bertha Rusk (1897-1964) on 5 January 1922 (reg. 1922/322) at the home of her father, Charles Bull Rusk in Paiaka. They had three children together: 

  1. Ellen Isabell Allan (1922-2002). Known as 'Isabell'. Born in Northland, Auckland, on 20 December 1922. She married Herbert George Ludlow (1913-1991) in Whangarei. Herbert died in Northland Base Hospital, Whangarei, aged 77, on 4 June 1991. His ashes were buried in Maunu Cemetery, Whangarei, his address recorded as 11 Wairere Avenue, Whangarei. His nationality is recorded as ‘India,’ his occupation as ‘retired overseer’ (Block 28, Plot 4078). Ellen died, aged 80, on 22 December 2002 (reg. 2003/563) in Gisborne. Her ashes were buried in the same plot as Herbert’s in Maunu Cemetery, Whangarei, on 30 December 2002 (Helen Cairns, Whangarei Cemetery Manager, personal communication, 20 January 2012).
  2. Dawn Allan (1924-2013). Born in Whangarei in 1924 (Folio No. 4083). She married Walter Noel Hoggard. Dawn died in 2013 (reg. 2013/18266).
  3. Audrey May Allan (1932-1952). Born in Te Puke on 16 May 1932. She died, aged 20, on 23 June 1952 (reg. 1952/21521) in Whangarei. Audrey was buried in Kamo Cemetery on 25 June 1952 (Block III, Row F, Plot 6) (Helen Cairns, Whangarei Cemetery Manager, personal communication, 18 January 2012).

Ellen died in Auckland on 27 August 1964. Cyril died, aged 71, on 20 October 1969 (reg. 1969/43565) at Paiaka, Bay of Islands.

Cyril and Ellen are buried together in Kamo Cemetery (No. 411).
