Charles Hallard Allan fought in World War I (1914-1918). In February 1919 he spent 25 days in hospital recovering from influenza, probably as a result of the 1918 Influenza Pandemic (Spanish 'flu), before marrying five months later in Scotland. He was my first cousin thrice removed - Debbie McCauley

Charles Hallard Allan (1893-1966)Charles Hallard Allan was born in Paiaka, Bay of Islands, on 27 November 1893. His birth was registered the following year, the record reading Charles Holland (reg. 1894/4724). His parents were Margaret Isabella McCauley (1867-1934) and Charles Hallard Allan (1849-1938).

Charles Hallard Allan was a private in World War I (Service No. 70032). His occupation before enlistment is noted as ‘bushman’. His father, Charles Allan from Hukerenui, is listed as his next of kin. He embarked with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, 35th Reinforcements A Company on 2 March 1918 from Wellington aboard the Tofua for Southampton, England. His nominal roll number is 80 (Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph Database).

On 22 February 1919, Charles was admitted to the King George Hospital in London suffering from influenza. He was recovered by 19 March 1919 (personnal record).

At age 25 Charles married the widowed Charlotte Colcroft (née Rennie) (1892-1983) in Glasgow, Scotland, on 9 July 1919. His occupation stated as ‘Dairy Farmer’. They travelled back to New Zealand where they had seven children together:

  1. Helen Rennie Allan (1920-2009). Born on 11 April 1920. She married Clarence Barker (c.1916-2000). Helen died, aged 89, on 11 April 2009 (reg. 2009/9177). She was cremated on 14 April 2009 (Whangarei Cemetery Records Online).
  2. Jack McCauley Allan (1922-2000). Known as 'Jock'. Born on 10 May 1922. He married Doreen Elizabeth Brock (1925- ) in 1947. Jack died on 22 September 2000 (reg. 2000/12772) in North Shore Hospital, Auckland.
  3. Katherine Georgina Allan (1923-2003). Known as 'Kitty'. Born in Whangarei on 31 July 1923. She married John O’Rorke (1922-2000). Katherine died in 2003 (reg. 2003/14827).
  4. Albert James Allan (1926-1987). Born in Auckland on 11 August 1926. Albert died, aged 61, on 21 July 1987 (reg. 1987/43861) in Paihia, Auckland. He was cremated on 24 July 1987 (Whangarei Cemetery Records Online).
  5. Donald Allan (1927-1928). Born in Whangarei in 1927. He died, aged 16 months, on 23 May 1928 (reg.1928/1132).
  6. Kenneth Murray Allan (1928- ). Born in Kawakawa, Bay of Islands, on 16 July 1928. He married Lesley Anne Partridge (1931- ) on 28 March 1953.
  7. Douglas Stuart Haig Allan (*-*). Born in Paiaka, Bay of Islands. He married Audrey.

Charles died, aged 72, on 29 May 1966 in Paihia, Bay of Islands. His ashes were buried in Waikumete Cemetery on 17 November 1966 (Soldiers Ash Burial, K Row 2a, Plot 165) (Auckland City Council Online Cemetery Database Search).

Charlotte died in Auckland on 7 April 1983. She was cremated at Purewa Cemetery on 11 April 1983 and her ashes scattered.
