White cross for Te Mangu Kuka (1898-1919) .


Te Mangu Kuka was born on Matakana Island, Tauranga. He enlisted to serve during World War I on 31 October 1918 and was with the New Zealand Training Unit at Narrow Neck Military Camp. Te Mangu died in Auckland Hospital on 22 January 1919, at the tail end of the 1918 Influenza Pandemic. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
