White cross for William Joseph Cunningham (1882-1917).


Tauranga farmer William Joseph Cunningham was part of the New Zealand No 1 Field Ambulance during World War I. He was killed in action on 12 October 1917 during the Battle of Passchendaele at Ypres in Belgium. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
