Caption

Tauranga mill hand Sydney Elliott Skellern died of his wounds during the Battle of Chunuk Bair in Gallipoli on 8 August 1915. One hundred years later his medals were returned to his family after being found in a Wellington home. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
