White cross for William John Francis (1888-1916) .


William John Francis was from Warrenpoint in County Down, Northern Ireland. He was working as an engineer at Omokoroa near Tauranga when he enlisted in World War I. William was wounded during the Battle of the Somme in France, dying of his wounds on 17 September 1916. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
