White cross for Claude Montefiore Samuel (1889-1918).


Long-time Tauranga resident and Bank of New Zealand Clerk, Claude Montefiore Samuel served during World War I with the New Zealand Machine Gun Corps, 34 Specialist Company. He was taken Prisoner of War in Germany and said to have died of disease there on 13 September 1918, burial place unknown. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
