White cross for Thomas Wahia (1894-1915).


Matakana Island farmer Thomas Wahia was killed in action at Gallipoli during the Battle of Chunuk Bair on 6 August 1915 whilst serving with the New Zealand Maori Contingent during World War I. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
