White cross for John James Salt (1899-1918).


New Zealand Railways worker John James Salt enlisted to fight during World War I , even though he was underage at only 17 years old. John was killed in action at Étaples in France on 12 September 1918. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
