Mining agent and South African War (Boer War) veteran Ronald Tracey Matheson was killed in action during World War I in South West Africa on 27 April 1915. He was the son of early Tauranga settlers Robert and Sarah Matheson. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918).
