White cross for Samuel James Keam (1887-1917).


Welcome Bay farmer Samuel James Keam was killed in action in Belgium on 7 June 1917, the first day of the Battle of Messines which was fought on the Western Front near the village of Messines in West Flanders. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
