White cross for George Henry Webbe Tobin (1885-1916).


George Henry Webbe Tobin was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme in Northern France on 15 September 1916, aged 31. He was buried in the Caterpillar Valley Cemetery at Longueval, Somme, France. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
