White cross for Samuel Pemberton (1893-1916).

After recovering from a gunshot wound sustained whilst fighting at Gallipoli, Tauranga carpenter Samuel Pemberton was killed in action at the Somme in Northern France on 17 September 1916. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
