White cross for Sidney Norris (1883-1916).


Aongatete farmer Sidney Norris was wounded in action at Armentières in France on 22 May 1916. He died of his multiple wounds at the Bailleul Casualty Clearing Station on 24 May 1916, aged 32. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
