White cross for Sidney Carlton McCarthny (1894-1916).

Tauranga surveyor Sidney Carlton McCarthny was serving during World War I when he was wounded in action at Armentières in Northern France in July 1916. He never recovered, and died at Boulogne on 18 August 1916 from gunshot wounds to the abdomen, aged 21. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
