Marine engineer Samuel Tanner was with the Merchant Navy during World War I. He was aboard the ship 'City of Perth' when it was torpedoed without warning by a German submarine and sunk on 11 June 1917. Samuel was one of eight who were killed.  In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
