Te Puke farmer Waru Davie Rewi served on the Western Front with the Maori Pioneer Battalion during World War I. He became ill and was deemed no longer physically fit for war service. Waru died of tuberculosis in Tauranga on 27 August 1920. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
