White cross for Thomas Leslie Lochhead (1890-1918) .

The younger brother of Te Puna farmer Thomas Leslie Lochhead died of his wounds at Cairo in Egypt on 11 May 1918. Just three months later, on 26 August 1918, Thomas was killed in action at Bapaume in France. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
