White cross for William Leslie Poad (1897-1918).

After signing up underage, William Leslie Poad received a gunshot wound to the scalp whilst serving during World War I. He was sent to Hornchurch Convalescent Camp to recover before returning to France. William was killed in action at Le Cateau in France on 1 October 1918. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
