White cross for Harry Dickson Rikihana (1894-1918) .


Harry Dickson Rikihana [aka Rongoihaere Rikihana] worked as a labourer for Gamman's Mill at Omanawa Falls in Tauranga. While serving in Étaples in northern France during World War I he contracted tuberculosis (TBand was deemed unfit for service. Harry died in Tauranga on 13 November 1918 during the Influenza Pandemic. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
