White cross for Herbert Pengelly Mansel (1895-1918) .


Tauranga farmer Herbert Pengelly Mansel was serving during World War I when he died of malaria at the 34th Clearing Station in Palestine on 23 October 1918 at the age of 23. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
