White cross for George Reeve Bettelheim (1889-1918) .


Returned to New Zealand due to illness after fighting for five months at Gallipoli during World War I, George Reeve Bettelheim died of tuberculosis in Tauranga on 26 April 1918. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
