White cross for George Alexander Douglas (1886-1915).


Drover George Alexander Douglas was killed in action at Gallipoli during the Battle of Chunuk Bair on 8 August 1915. The following day his younger brother Thomas Lewis Douglas was also killed at Gallipoli. In 2014 Tauranga's 'Field of Remembrance' was created comprising 107 white crosses in memory of the men from the Tauranga area who died during World War I (1914-1918). Each cross carries a red poppy and the name of an individual who died. Text and photograph © Debbie McCauley (2014).
