ACKNOWLEDGEMENT HUGH HARRISON. Photo from a WWI album (1914-1918) taken by his Father Arthur Charles Harrison (1894-1994). Photograph taken during the Second World War of an early Cenotaph. Engraved from top NZ Bde – 4th A MR – In Memory of – 13/315 Sgt C. Carter – 11/1569 Sgt J.A. Kay – 13/1171 Cpl C.D. Payne – 13/22012 Cpl E.D. Harris – 13/2336 Tpr C.H. Hollis – 13/2245 Tpr W.G. Roberts – 13/3161 Tpr H.G. Haswell. The names indicate this memorial as modern day Ramia (then Ramleh). According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission “RAMLEH WAR CEMETERY dates from the First World War, when Ramleh (now Ramla) was occupied by the 1st Australian Light Horse Brigade on 1 November 1917. Field ambulances, and later casualty clearing stations were posted at Ramleh and Lydda from December 1917 onwards. The cemetery was begun by the medical units, but some graves were brought in later from the battlefields and from Latron, Sarona and Wilhema Military and Indian Cemeteries.” (1) Is it possible that this memorial photographed by Arthur Harrison is one of these? ..(1) Commonwealth War Graves Commission website. http://www.cwgc.org/find-a-cemetery/cemetery/4003783/RAMLEH%201914-18%20MEMORIAL accessed May 2013.
