In 1989 Tauranga RSA and Tauranga City Council started planning a new memorial in the south-eastern corner of Memorial Park. It was intended to bring together the names on the rolls of honour listed on the Tauranga First World War memorial gates, the World War II cenotaph already at Memorial Park (near the Devonport Road entrance), and the memorial at the Tauranga RSA. The new memorial was unveiled on Armistice Day 1990. It sits in the south-western corner of the park on the corner of 11th Avenue and Fraser Street. Steps lead up to the cenotaph and the series of black polished granite slabs. The slabs feature 86 local names from World War I (1914-1918), 72 names from World War II (1939-1945) and other plaques for South Africa and the Vietnam War.Text and photographs: Debbie McCauley (20 September 2012).
