Caption

He was a member of crew of an Avro Lancaster bomber - Registration No. DS655 - of 115 Squadron and piloted by Flight Lieutenant G W Cammell. The aircraft was but one of 519 which took off from an airfield near East Wretham late in the evening of 27 May 1943 to bomb the Krupp Armament at Essen. Halford's Lancaster was one of 23 that failed to return. Apparently they were shot down and with the exception of their pilot all perished in the early hours of 28 May 1943. Ft. Lt. Cammell, No. NZ415290 survived but was taken prisoner of war. His crew are all buried in the Reischwald Forest War Cemetery. Photograph: Auckland Weekly News.
