Corporal Claude Patrick Quinlan (12/2916) was of Matamata in the Waikato. His service record identifies he served in several theatres of operations:

  • Australiasia (1914), 
  • Egyptian (1915-1916), 
  • Egyptian E.F. (1916) (Expeditionary Forces)
  • and Western European theatres of war 

Between August 11 1914 and December 12 1918. He received the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal, though not issued the later two until 1922.

He first embarked with the Samoan Advance Party and 7th Reinforcements as part of the Auckland Infantry Battalion aboard HMNZT 1 and 2 (Moeraki or Monowai) destined for Apia Samoa and Suez Eqypt.

He was wounded in the head some time early July 1916 and spent time at Hornchurch Hospital in England.

During his service he kept up a correspondence with the love of his life and these are available here as both handwritten (43 mb) and transcribed bundles (21 mb).
