John Leslie Hume was born in Auckland on 19 November 1898 to John and Jessie Taylor Hume (nee Allanach) who married in Sydney, Australia, in 1895.
John worked on the coach lines on the Napier to Taupo Road.
He left from Katikati and served during World War I (1914-1918).
On his return in 1922 he worked in Waihi as a driver for Deverell & Crimmins on the daily Waihi to Tauranga motor service. The bad road meant that cars were often stuck in the mud. During one run, Les had 21 adult passengers in his 8-seater car. This record number is immortalised in the Katikati mural 'Overload' by Peter Nicholson of Whitanga. In 1928 the railway opened and the service wound down.
In 1922 John married Eleanor Annie Reynolds. They had twin boys together, but Eleanor died three days after giving birth. In 1926 he married Emily Georgina Elizabeth Potts.
The children of John Leslie Hume:
- David Reynolds Hume (1923-2003). Twin born in Tauranga in 1923. Dave served during World War II (1939-1945). He married Irene Margaret Ann Brown in 1948. He died in Katikati in 2003 and was cremated in Tauranga.
