Constable Charlie Dunne was an early policeman in Katikati. A versatile man, he was secretary for the Roads, Cemetery and Domain Boards, as well as a bandmaster and choirmaster.

Charles Thomas Dunne was born in Dublin, Ireland, on 5 March 1851 and was christened at the Parish of St Catherine's in Dublin on 2 May 1851. His parents were Cabinet Weaver Thomas Johnson and Eliza S Dunne (nee Jones) of Dolphins Barn in Dublin who married in 1846

It is said that Charles served in the Imperial Army.

He arrived in Auckland, New Zealand aboard the Carisbrooke Castle on 8 September 1875 with his parents and three sisters. From there, they were transported to Tauranga and then on to Katikati.

In 1885 he married Isabella Rowan Montgomery who was born in 1862. They had six children together:

  1. Charles Henry Dunne (1886-1979). Born in Katikati in 1886, Charles married Annie Jane Simms in 1916. He died in Auckland in 1979 and was buried at Otahuhu.
  2. Margaret Burney Dunne (1889-1976). Born in Katikati in 1889, Margaret married John Stewart Middlebrook. She died in Katikati in 1976 and is buried in Katikati Cemetery.
  3. Albert Thomas Dunne (1890-1954). Born in Katikati in 1890, Albert served during World War I (1914-1918). He married Marjorie Winifred Webster in 1923. Albert died in Whangarei in 1954 and was buried in Whangarei Cemetery.
  4. Ethel Eliza Dunne (1893-1983). Born in Katikati in 1893, Ethel served as the Katikati postmistress. She married Robert Harold Holmes in 1922. She died in Auckland in 1983 and was cremated at Purewa.
  5. Isabella Irene Dunne (1895-1979). Born in Katikati in 1895, Isabella married Charles Annabell in 1936. She died in Auckland in 1979 and was cremated at Purewa.
  6. Mary Louise Dunne (1898-1987). Born in Katikati in 1898, Mary first married Patrick Vincent Burns in 1923. She married Horace Trevor McIntosh in 1957. Mary died in Otahuhu, Auckland in 1987 and was cremated at Papatoetoe.

Charles was a policeman in Katikati from 1888 on a salary of £18 per annum, being appointed the Waterford District Police Constable. This was renamed the Katikati Police Station in 1892.

Isabella died, aged 55, on 24 July 1917 (reg. 1917/5153). The following year, in 1918, Charles married Jane Brimer Scott.

In 1922 Charles retired from the police force.

Jane died, aged 82, in 1942 (reg. 1942/17360).

Charles died in Katikati, aged 96, on 15 September 1947 (reg. 1947/25868). He was buried in Katikati Cemetery.
