Walter Hamilton was born in Katikati on 5 January 1883. His parents were Katikati pioneers John and Rachel Hamilton (nee Lennard).
Walter was brought up in Katikati and then later moved to Waverley. He worked as a farmhand and was very good at breaking in horses. He lost an eye during the course of his work.
On 23 September 1908 he married Mabel Ruth Wall in Stratford, Taranaki. They had sixteen children together.

Walter started a carrying business at Whakamara firstly with horse and dray and then trucks. He carted coal from the 'railheads' and cheese etc from the dairy factories. At the same time he also had an "Ayreshire" stud which was in those days milked by hand. When the Dairy Factory closed he sold the carrying business.
Some of the family worked for their father but didn't draw wages but their accounts were paid by him. Walter didn't let the children leave school until they had at least got their proficiency certificate.
Walter worked until he was 73 and was a very keen gardener. He died, aged 75, on 15 November 1958 in Stratford, Taranaki and was buried on 17 November 1958 in Hawera Cemetery, South Taranaki.
