Known as Ray, Ethel Macmillan was a philanthropist and major contributor to the establishment of the Tauranga Art Gallery.

Ethel (Ray) Urania Macmillan (1900-1984)Ethel Urania Macmillan was born in Auckland on 11 February 1900. She was known as Ray. Her parents were Charles Edward Duncan Angus Evan Ewan Macmillan (1872-1941) who was Mayor of Tauranga from 1915 to 1917, and Ethel Louisa (nee Latham).

Ethel donated $457,000 towards the establishment of the Tauranga Art Gallery.

Ethel died in Tauranga on 8 October 1984 (reg. 1984/50550). Her ashes were buried in the Tauranga Anglican Cemetery. Her headstone reads:

Ethel Urania MacMILLAN d 8 Oct 1984. 84 yrs. A life of devoted service to the community.
