Caption

The site of Katikati founder George Vesey Stewart’s land Mount Stewart was located on Martray Road, on the left side of the road up to approximately No. 53. Stewart’s son, George Vesey Stewart (Jnr), purchased the land off his father and his first child was born there in 1890. Unfortunately Stewart (Jnr) drowned in an accident at Katikati on 23 July 1892. There was an auction held at Mount Stewart on 15 September 1892 and much of the farm implements and stock were sold. Stewart (Jnr)’s widow Cecilia gave birth to their third child at Katikati on 24 February 1893. On 31 August 1893 the 180 acre Mount Stewart farm was leased out to Robert Francis Blakeney. Cecilia and the three children moved to Auckland in 1909 where Cecilia taught music to provide an income for the family.
