Robert and Emily Hunter and family (1900).


Robert Hunter was born in Blackheath, Near Greenwich, Kent, England in 1850. He is said to have arrived in New Zealand on board the 'Carisbrooke Castle' in 1875 and to have met his future wife, Emily Gertrude Crossley, daughter of Reverend John Crossley, on board. The couple were married in Auckland on 29 January 1876. Their first child, Gertrude Thornton Hunter, born on 14 September 1876 at Fairlight, Katikati, is said be the first European girl born and registered in the Katikati district.
