Mary Stewart was the sister of Katikati founder George Vesey Stewart. She was born in Ballygawley, County Tryone, Ireland in 1836. Mary married Robert Gledstanes in Ireland in 1857. Robert's first wife Sophia (nee Moutray) had died in 1848. Robert died in Ireland in 1876. Mary arrived in New Zealand with her family on board the 'Northern Monarch' which arrived on 1 February 1879. She firstly lived at Larkspur in Katikati but then moved to Tauranga in c1889. Later, a retirement home was built for Mary in Katikati overlooking the Uretara River. This was named Twickenham. Mary later moved to Epsom, Auckland, but died at her daughter's Tauranga home in 1919 and was buried in Katikati Cemetery. Adela Steward died at Twickenham in 1910. She had returned to New Zealand with her son to publicise her book ‘My Simple Life in New Zealand’.
