Caption

William Taylor was born in Holtby, Yorkshire, England in c1854. In 1881 William purchased a 40 acre farm [Surtees Road] from early Katikati settler John Hamilton. This land was called Riversdale [one of two Riversdale's in Katikati]. At the Katikati Fair on 9 April 1885 there were some "very large onions, weighing over 2lb each, and grown in Katikati by Mr William Taylor." His first wife Annie died in Katikati on 21 December 1913 and was buried in the Katikati Cemetery. In 1915 he married Jessie Pye (nee Janet Dykes). He was a patient at Waihi Hospital during the 1918 Influenza Pandemic. William died in Katikati on 31 March 1923. Riversdale was later farmed by his stepson, John Armour Pye (1897-1972), the child of Jessie and George Henry Pye. In 1921 John Armour Pye married Malleta May Dickey (1898-1981), eldest daughter of Samuel and Catherine Dickey.
