David Lundon (1844-1931).

David Lundon was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, in 1844. HIs parents were David and Charlotte Lundon (nee Toomey). The family moved to New Zealand in c1848. His education included St. Patrick's School, and the Rev. John Gorrie's Academy in Auckland. Later he was apprenticed to Messrs Percy and Kennerd, saddlers, with whom he served four years. Finding that inside work did not suit him, David decided to learn the building trade. After serving five years' apprenticeship, he set up business on his own as a builder and contractor, working for many years in Auckland before moving to Tauranga. David was a member of the Auckland Militia during the British invasion of the Waikato (17 July 1863 - April 1864). He married Sarah Waddel (c1845-1926) in Auckland on 27 October 1866. When David arrived in Tauranga in 1867 he joined the Bay of Plenty cavalry and may have seen action during the Tauranga Bush Campaign. He was on the Tauranga Borough Council from 1882. In 1885 David and Fitzgibbon Louch built 'Woodhill' in Grange Road, Tauranga for Henry Stainforth Brabant. In 1887 he was made Justice of the Peace. David was elected Mayor of Tauranga in 1887, 1890, 1891 and 1892. In 1888 he established himself in business as an auctioneer and general merchant, and was joined by Mr. Raymond in 1896. David died in Auckland on 16 May 1931. This photograph of David Lundon was taken in Katikati in 1899 by Emily Surtees.
