George Vesey Stewart (MBE, JP) was born at Brighton in Sussex, England on 3 October 1831. He was christened there on 20 January 1832. George first arrived in New Zealand in 1874 searching for suitable land to create a new settlement. His 'Ulster Plantation' was eventually located in Katikati.George was elected the first Mayor of Tauranga in 1882.This photograph of George and his dog Tim was taken by his eldest daughter, Emily Surtees, in July of 1899. George is standing with a shovel in his right hand, whilst his dog Tim is sitting in front of him. In the background is his home at Katikati called Martray.
