Stewart brothers playing cards at Martray (1899).

Caption

Harry, Hugh and William Stewart are three of nine children of George Vesey and Margaret Torrens Stewart (nee Miller) who married in Ireland in 1856 and arrived in New Zealand on board the Carisbrooke Castle on 8 June 1875. This photograph shows the brothers seated around a small table in the midst of a card game. All three are smoking pipes and looking at their cards. Through the foliage behind them can be seen their home at Katikati, a homestead named Martray after their ancestral estate in Ireland. Photographed by their older sister, Emily Surtees, in 1899.
