Patrick McDonald was born in Galway, Ireland in c1839. He enlised in the 68th (Durham) Light Infantry (The Faithful Durhams) on 24 February 1858 (Regimental No: 208). Patrick was a Private and became a Gun Stocker. In 1864 the 68th arrived in New Zealand from Burma. They arrived in Tauranga on board the HMS Miranda under Colonel Meurant. Patrick received gunshot wounds to the chest and left arm during the Battle of Gate Pā at Pukehinahina on 29 April 1864. He died from his wounds on 5 May 1864, aged 25. Patrick was buried in Tauranga Mission Cemetery (Otamataha Pā). His ground plaque reads: 'Sacred to the memory of Patrick McDonald, 68th D.L.I., died of wounds received at Pukehina [Pukehinahina], 5th May 1864, aged 25 years'. Patrick is also remembered on the Tauranga 1st Waikato Militia New Zealand Wars memorial (1909). Text and photograph by Debbie McCauley (22 November 2016).
