Headstone of John Cady (c1842-1869).

Caption

John Cady was born in London, England in c1842. He joined the 40th (2nd SomersetshireRegiment of Foot (Regimental No. 3376), arriving in New Zealand in the early 1860s. On 2 August 1866 John applied to the Colonial Defence Force for a discharge. He joined the Armed Constabulary (Division 1) on 11 December 1868. His service ended on 21 August 1869. John drowned in Tauranga nine days later, on 30 August 1869, and was buried in Tauranga Mission Cemetery (Otamataha Pā). His ground plaque reads: Sacred to the memory of John Cady, drowned at Tauranga, 30th Aug. 1869Text and photograph by Debbie McCauley (20 November 2016).
