Headstone of James McAnary (c1835-1865).

Caption

James McAnary was born in c1835. He enlisted in the  68th (Durham) Light Infantry (The Faithful Durhams) and likely arrived in New Zealand with the regiment from Burma in 1864. James drowned at Judea in Tauranga on 27 July 1865. He was aged 30. James was buried in Tauranga Mission Cemetery (Otamataha Pā). His ground plaque reads; Sacred to the memory of Pvte. James McAnary, Brevet-Major Trents Coy., 68th D.L.I., Drowned at Judea 27th July 1865 aged 30 yearsText and photograph by Debbie McCauley (22 November 2016).
