Caption

Benjamin Cordwell was born in Middlesex, England in 1845, likely to Edwin Cordwell (1819-1880) and his wife Harriett (nee Sutton) (1819-?). It is not known when he arrived in New Zealand, but he was part of the Auckland Militia. He joined the 1st Waikato Militia from Auckland on 29 June 1863 (Regiment No. 334). Benjamin died in Tauranga on 14 March 1865 at the age of 20. He was buried in Mission Cemetery (Otamataha Pā). His ground plaque reads; 'Sacred to the memory of Benjamin Cordwell, 3rd Coy., 1st W. R., died at Tauranga 14th March 1865 aged 20 years.' The 1866 Army Department Inwards Correspondence Register held by Archives New Zealand records: '1866/567 Oct 20 [1865] Claiming property of his son Benj. Cordwell, 1st Waikato Regiment deceased (Edwin Cordwell, Brentwood).' Text and photograph by Debbie McCauley (22 November 2016).
