Headstone of Elizabeth Moon (nee Matherall) (1806-1901).

Elizabeth Moon followed her husband, Colonel William Moon, to New Zealand in 1864. They moved to Gate Pa soon after the battles of Gate Pa and Te Ranga. Elizabeth burnt to death in a fire at her home. She was almost 95 years old. She was buried in Mission Cemetery (Otamataha Pā). Elizabeth's headstone has been damaged, coming away from it's base. However it has since been leaned up against it's base and fixed in place there. Text and photograph by Debbie McCauley (1 October 2016). Tauranga City Libraries Image Number: 16-255.
