Headstone of Ada & Eleanora Turner.

Headstone of Ada Campbell Turner and her sister Eleanora Grace Turner who were the children of Capt. Archibald Campbell and Eleanora Jane Turner (nee Simson). Ada was born in Brockville, Ontario, Canada on 10 October 1861. She died in Tauranga on 5 December 1876 at the age of 15 years. The Bay of Plenty Times  reported: The early death of Miss Ada Turner, the daughter of one of Tauranga's most esteemed settlers, which is recorded in our obituary notice today, will be felt throughout the district as a common cause for sorrow. It is not our custom to intrude upon the privacy of domestic bereavement, but in the present instance, where such universal regard was felt for the departed, and when it is remembered how in her growth from childhood to maidenhood the sweetness of her disposition endeared her to all, we feel we are only obeying the dictates of a common impulse by saying, on behalf of all her friends how much her loss is felt, and how great is the sympathy for those she leaves behind (Bay of Plenty Times, 6 December 1876, p. 3). Her death notice reads: TURNER At Tauranga, on December 5, Ada Campbell, eldest daughter of Captain A C Turner, aged 15 years. The funeral will take place tomorrow the 7th inst at 3 o’clock pm (Bay of Plenty Times, 6 December 1876, p. 2). Eleanora was born in Tauranga on 25 July 1871. She died on 19 March 1872, aged 10 months old. Text and photograph by Debbie McCauley (1 October 2016). Tauranga City Libraries Image Number: 16-262.
