Headstone of George Berins (c1828-1867).


George Berins was born in c1828. He enlisted in the 12th (East Suffolk) Regiment of Foot, 1st Battalion, on 20 January 1856. George died in Tauranga on 3 January 1867 and was buried in Mission Cemetery (Otamataha Pā). His ground plaque reads: Sacred to the memory of George Berins, E Coy., 1st Batt., 12th Reg. Died at Te Papa 3rd Jan. 1867. A previous part of the inscription read: Erected by the N.C.O.s & men, as a token of respect. Text and photograph by Debbie McCauley (1 October 2016).
