Robert Youngson arrived in Tauranga with his family in 1902. He fought in World War I (1914-1918), later farming at Otumoetai.
Robert Youngson was born in Christchurch on 29 June 1885 (reg. 1885/15670) to John and Amelia Youngson. He enlisted in World War I (1914-1918), embarking as a Trooper on 9 October 1915 from Wellington with the 7th Reinforcements, Auckland Mounted Rifles, to Suez, Egypt.
In 1917 he married Eliza Sangster McAdam in Scotland whilst convalescing after World War I.
Eliza died, aged 72, on 22 April 1964 (reg. 1964/35414). Robert died just ten days later, aged 79, on 2 May 1964 (reg. 1964/35399).
Much information can be gleaned from Robert's obituary which appeared in the Bay of Plenty Times in 1964:
Obituary: Mr and Mrs R. Youngson. The deaths of two members of one of Tauranga's old established families have occurred within 10 days of one another. They were Mr Robert Youngson, who died on Saturday, and his wife, Mrs Eliza Youngson, who died on April 22. Upon retirement, the couple were engaged in dairy farming at Otumoetai. Mr Youngson was born in 1885 at Christchurch, but spent much of his childhood in the Wairarapa when his parents took up farming in the district. When, in 1902, his family came to Tauranga to farm, Mr Youngson, then aged 17 drove a light wagon with three horses with his friend, the late Mr Bill Robbins, from Ekatahuna to Tauranga. The trip took several weeks. Prior to the first world war he farmed at Otumoetai. He was a member of the Volunteer Hauraki Mounted Rifles, and in 1915 went to Egypt, where he served with NZ forces before be invalided to London. He then served in France and Germany in 1919. Shortly after his convalesence in 1917, Mr Youngson visited Scotland, where he met and married Miss Eliza MdAdam, of Aberdeen. The couple returned to Tauranga after the war. As a young man, Mr Youngson was highly regarded as a yachtsman, and for a period was almost invincible on the Tauranga Harbour in his 18ft yacht Rainbow. Horse-riding, hunting and soldiering were his other passions before the war. In later years his main interests were sheepdog trials, in which he had considerable success, and gardening. Until she came to Otumoetai, Mrs Youngson's main interests were singing and choir work. She was a keen gardener and her interests centred mainly on her home and family. Before her marriage she was employed by a printing concern in Aberdeen.Mr and Mrs Youngson are survived by a son and four daughter. (Bay of Plenty Times, 1964).
