Photograph of archivist Stephanie Smith with a framed watercolour by British soldier Horatio Gordon Robley called Maori Sentry on Gate at Maketu (1865). The artwork shows an Arawa warrior with moko on his face and tattoos on his body. He is wearing a traditional skirt, possibly made from harekeke (flax), and performing a haka peruperu (war dance). In his right hand he holds a tewhatewha (long handled wooden weapon). He is grimacing with his tongue extended, making himself appear more fierce. Behind him are the palisade of Maketū Pā (Maketū is a small town on the Bay of Plenty Coast) and a gateway made from an old canoe set vertically and carved with a large painted head showing the 'moko' of the tribe. During the 19 months between 1864 and 1866 that he spent with the 68th Durham Light Infantry in New Zealand Robley recorded many scenes and people from Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty (Shelf Ref: Bay 2, Shelf C).
