The Matariki Film Challenge is the first of its kind in Tauranga Moana, focusing on local stories with a Matariki theme. The competition is for all kura to be involved in the process of creating a film: scriptwriting, directing, acting, editing, filming, producing, storyboarding and everything in between. The project is led by Mike Jonathan of Haka Boy Films, and mentor and international artist Tiki Taane. Submissions close on 1 July 2016. Photos: Richard Robinson.

Matariki Film Challenge (2016) 

Mahi – Participants attend the workshops and created a short film (five minutes maximum) in a standard video file format such as .mp4 or.mov relating to Matariki and/or stories from Tauranga Moana (this meant a little bit of fun research). All they need is a video camera or smartphone.

Paraihe – The Matariki Film Challenge is run by the Matariki Festival Committee and supported by Tauranga City Libraries, which put in cash prizes and vouchers up to the value of $500 for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third place.
