On 8 September 2015 Tauranga City Libraries participated in Random Acts of Reading in Wharf Street to celebrate International Literacy Day (2015). The library gave out café and book vouchers as well as bead kits too. It was a beautiful sunny spring day on the newly refurbished Wharf Street. Photos: Debbie McCauley.

Workers, families and community representatives from Literacy and Language Bay of Plenty and Altrusa Tauranga gathered in Wharf Street to participate in the event. Staff gave out encouragement in the form of sweet treats, whilst various people played music on Creative Tauranga's colourful piano.

Each year the library partners with a Literacy Aotearoa not-for-profit voluntary organisation, Literacy and Language Bay of Plenty, which successfully assists local adults to improve their reading, writing and numeracy skills.
