Family History Month (August 2015)

On Thursday 13 August 2015 Tauranga City Library hosted a Library Lock-in called A Night of History from 5:30 to 9:10pm. There was a full house for the, the cost being $10 plus a plate. Patrons enjoyed access to all genealogy tools in the library, but especially beneficial to the group were the volunteer genealogists Olive Caddie, Joy Edmonds, and Heather McLean.

One patron had been searching details about his great grandmother and details about a Waikato Militia member. Both searches were successful. Another researcher, who has transcribed 12,000 names into http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ , brought in his laptop, and, with the library computer, and Olive’s help and laptop, managed to identify more records. A new researcher (actually this event is really for more advanced researchers) discovered that before you begin your own search, check the web – in this case his daughter had put loads of family history on the internet, but failed to mention it to Father.

Bev was a big help ensuring the printer actually printed the correct size of records required and other computer related questions, as well as the genealogy sites; and set up the time-out session. Fiona helped patrons and guided them in and out of the library. This was the third visit by some of the users who value the time, space and especially the expertise.

In addition a Speaker Series was organised with four speakers giving talks each Tuesday of Family History Month:
